Danny Gift whose real name is Daniel Ng’ang’a is a Kenya gospel musician.Born and bred in a strict Akorino family, he removed his headscarf and converted to another denomination, a move that put him at crossroads with the members of his family for more two years.

Music Career

Danny Gift started singing professionally in 2008 in a trio gospel group called Fisher of men, which later split in 2010 after section of the group members felt like they were being dragged down behind by others.

However it was until 2012 that Danny Gift officially debuted in the showbiz scene after he emerged as one of the finalist at a reality television show dubbed the Exodus, a singing competition aired by the national broadcaster.

“It was after the reality show that I collaborated with gospel singer Hey-Z on song Bando Nasonga which opened up doors for me in the showbiz scene,” he says.

Now a fulltime worship leader at Devine Destiny Church in Kasarani, Danny Gift describes his music as a ‘mixture of taarab and bongo’ music.

Contrary to a popular misconception that he hails from Mombasa, Danny Gift was raised in Mwiki, Nairobi, has never lived in coastal city and in fact some his critics accuse him of aping bongo artistes.

“I am not a copycat I sing in Swahili because it has been my favourite language since primary school,” he defends himself.

In 2011 he released his debut single titled Najua upo a song that also helped cement his place in the gospel industry.

Nonetheless the 25-year-old notes that that it has taken him longer to become a regular face compared to artistes whom he started the music journey with, believing that God’s timing is always the best.

He blames his slow rise on the vigorous competition in the local music scene and lack of proper marketing strategy as an artiste.
