Justice Isaac Lenaola Biography

Justice Isaac Lenaola was born on 21st December 1967 in Samburu county. He is a judge at the supreme court. He is a former presiding judge of the Constitution and Human Rights Division of the High Court.

Justice Isaac Lenaola  Education Background

In 1990, he joined the Kenya School of Law until 1991 when he was admitted to the Bar.

1987-1990: Undergraduate student at the University of Nairobi, Bachelor’s Degree in Law.

1981-1986: Secondary school student at Alliance High School, O-Levels studies and A-levels; He was awarded the Gandhi Smarak Nidhi Award for the best possible achievement in A-Levels in Kenya.

Primary school student at  Baragoi Primary School, Certificate of Primary Education.

1974: Primary school student at Maralal D.E.B. Primary School.

1973-1974: Primary school student at  St. Mary’s Nursery School in Maralal.

Justice Isaac Lenaola  Career

Justice Isaac Lenaola joined Rimui & Mubia Advocates as an Associate Advocate after his pupilage.

1999- 2003: Partner and Head of the Litigation Department at the firm of Maina Wachira & Company Advocates.

He served as the Secretary–General of the Asat Welfare Society and as the Chairman of the Legal Affairs Sub-Committee of both the Olmaa Development Association and the Kenya Pastoralists Forum.

Justice Isaac Lenaola has served as a consultant for the World Bank, the Arid Lands Management project, Oxfam and the International Union for Conservation of Nature on issues of land and resource management and conflicts in pastoralist regions.

1999-2001: Commissioner with the Peoples Commission of Kenya, a civil society driven constitutional reform process.

2001-2004:  Commissioner in the merged Constitution of Kenya Review Commission (CKRC) (When the Peoples Commission merged with the parliamentary appointed commission under Prof. Yash Ghai)

As a Commissioner in the CKRC, he was in the Drafting Committee which drafted the initial draft of the second constitution which was later redrafted by the Committee of Experts and is now the Constitution of Kenya, 2010.

28th October 2003: He was appointed as a High Court judge, he served as a Resident Judge in Embu, Meru, Machakos and Kakamega.

2010-2013:Commissioner in the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).

From July 2011: Deputy Principal Judge of the Court of First Instance of the East African Court of Justice.

November 2013: Appointed by the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon as a Judge of the Residual Special Court for Sierra Leone. As a judge at the Residual Court, he is involved in retrials, reviews and commutation of sentences from the former Special Court for Sierra Leone.

Justice Isaac Lenaola has also served as the Chairman of the Kenya Magistrates & Judges Association, Honorary Treasurer of the East African Magistrates & Judges Association, and Member of the World Council of the International Association of Refugee Law Judges.

He was a Member of the Tribunal Investigating the Conduct of Puisne Judges following the “radical surgery” of the judiciary in 2003.

He sits in the board of the Kenya Judicial Training Institute.

Currently, Justice Isaac Lenaola is the presiding judge of the Constitution and Human Rights Division of the High Court and is deputy principal judge of the East Africa Court of Justice.

Justice Isaac Lenaola  Awards

On 17th December, 2015 CJ Willy Mutunga presented an honorary membership award to Justice Isaac Leonala on behalf of East Africa Law Society (EALS). This is in recognition of his outstanding support and contribution to the development of regional jurisprudence and his exemplary service to the bench both in the Republic of Kenya and at the East African level.
