Moses Tanui Biography
Moses Tanui was born on 20th August 1965 in Elgryo Marakwet county. He is a former long distance runner who was the first athlete to run a half marathon in less than one hour by running 59:47 in Milan on 3 April 1993 and improved the previous world record by remarkable 59 seconds. His record was broken five years later by Paul Tergat.

During the 1991 World Championships which was held in Tokyo he won the gold medal over 10,000 metres
At the 1993 World Championships in athletics which was held in stuttgart he finished second after a controversial incident on the final lap in which he lost one shoe after he made contact with Haile Gebrselassie who finished first.
On 3rd April 1993 in Milan during the half marathon he became the first athlete to run the half marathon in less than one hour by running 59:47 and improved the previous world record by remarkable 59 seconds.
In 1995,during the IAAF World Half Marathon Championsips he won gold.
In 1996 at the Boston Marathon he became first, winning gold
In 1997, during the IAAF World Half Marathon Championsips he became second winning silver.
In 1998, during the 102nd Boston Maraton he won gold.
In 1999, during the Chicago Marathon he finished second in 2:06:16, which was a Kenyan national record snd the third fastest marathon in history at that point.
In 2000, during the chicago marathon he finished third in 2:07:47 winning bronze.
In 2002, during the Vienna Marathon he finished first in 2:10:25 winning gold.
In 2004, he competed at the Seoul International marathon and retired later due to knee injury.
After the retirement he runs a training camp in Kaptagat.
Moses Tanui Accident
In 2010, when he was coming from Nairobi to launch a website for the Kass Marathon together with David Lelei, a former All Africa Ganes 1,500m runner, they were involved in an accident along the Nakuru-Nairobi highway when their car hit a stationary truck and it went flying before landing on the roof.
He was lucky he got away with minimal bruises on the hand and leg and chest pain. His friend was not lucky and died on the spot.
