David Makali Political Ambitions
Political analyst and media consultant David Makali, also known as Cheche, has officially declared his interest to vie for the Bungoma senate seat in next year’s polls.
Makali made the announcement on Sunday at Mayuba stadium in Sirisia constituency while accompanied by Budalangi MP Ababau Namwamaba and Sirisia MP John Waluke.
“Now that Wetangula has declared that his bid to capture the country’s top job come next year’s polls the County senate seat is vacant and I will be vying for it,” Makali said.
His entry into the race brings to three the number of candidates interested in the seat; Makali had attempted to fight it out for the seat during a past by-election.
Those who have so far expressed interest in the seat are former Bungoma tourism chief officer Evans Fwamba and area chamber of commerce and industry chairman Reverend Herman Kasili.
It is not yet clear whether former Webuye MP Musikari Kombo and former Bumula MP Bifwoli Wakoli will also be in the ballot.
The two are rumored to be in the race but have not officially declared the intentions to unseat the incumbent Moses Wetang’ula, who has declared that he will be vying for presidency.
Makali, who emerged a distant third during the Bungoma senatorial by-election in 2014, said he is best suited to represent the county at the senate.
“I tried to capture the seat in the senatorial mini poll that we had inNovember 2014but it escaped me. I am much hopeful that this time I will get it since my greatest competitor Wetangula has insisted on the presidency,” Makali said.
Makali did not say which party he will be vying on but it is rumored that he might be joining the New FORD Kenya Party that is led by Bungoma governor Kenneth Lusaka.
Fwamba has already kicked off his campaigns targeting funerals, fundraisers, church services and other functions to hunt for votes.
