Anne Kiguta Biography

“Media is a testosterone driven business. No we are not treated like equals. but its up to you to make your presence felt and take your position. I have faced my fair of chauvinism. Even now, with some male peers, they still from time to time talk down to women. Having said that, I have also had the fortune to work work with great men in this business who didn’t shoo me away from their offices with my million questions as a young journalist. The challenges have become a powerful motivator for me. I strive to be doubly good at what I do. Having said that, who wants to be treated as equals? I’m a woman, specially designed by my creator to bring things to life. I was made for greatness. Treat me special because I am!”

“No. But isn’t that the story that some bloggers would love to tell! it is as if women can’t get ahead without cat-fights or sleeping around. Anyway, I do not shy away from challenges or opportunity. I do my homework and put my best foot forward always! I focus on Anne. I’m her number one cheerleader and her fiercest critic. I don’t look over my shoulder to see who is doing what. I have my mission and my purpose and I’m determined to accomplish it. I have been blessed to achieve many firsts throughout my career. First to go straight to prime time, being the youngest to hold several editorial positions etc. These things did not come on a silver platter. They have come through a lot of prayer and hard work. I’m proud of my accomplishments and thankful for the opportunity to do what I do.”

“I am 30 years old and the last of four girls. I grew up in an average Kenyan family. We weren’t wealthy and my parents made it abundantly clear that I had to work for everything I wanted in life. So I learnt the values of work, determination and tenacity quite early in life. My upbringing was difficult because I was raised in a home where my father physically assaulted my mother and on occasion my sisters and myself. It was a very painful experience but many beautiful things have come out of that including the work I do with Kenyan families. I am part of various mentorship programmes in Kenya for women and girls with save the children as a child nutrition advocate. I am also a mother to the coolest kid I know, Sasha,”

Anne Kiguta Married – Anne Kiguta Husband

Anne Kiguta was once a victim of an abusive relationship? Speaking about her ordeal to True Love, the hot TV siren gave details of her life that she has never told anyone.

Apparently, there is a day before she went live on KTN that her baby daddy furiously beat her up while she was holding her three year old baby Wairimu, but she stood strong, applied make up and went on air.

Anne Kiguta Scandal

According to her, she did not leave him but stayed in the relationship mainly because of her baby but after the third beating she packed her bags and left. In her own words, that was the best decision she has ever made in her life.
Currently she is in a serious relationship with a very good man and she has been with him for the past one year and four months. She further added that she has never been married.

Ann Kiguta Biography – Interview

The first impression I got from Anne Kiguta the first time I got to know her is not the fact that she’s uniquely beautiful (I love her Modesty Blaise hair flare) and her exceptionally smart personality. She’s a rare kind of a woman, not only because of her outstanding achievements and persona, but also because of her tenacity. She has overcome chauvinism at places of work and abuse by both her dad and ex-boyfriend.

Anne Kiguta Dossier

“MY UPBRINGING WAS DIFFICULT BECAUSE I WAS RAISED IN A HOME WHERE MY FATHER PHYSICALLY ASSAULTED MY MOTHER AND ON OCCASION MY SISTERS AND MYSELF. IT WAS A VERY PAINFUL EXPERIENCE BUT MANY BEAUTIFUL THINGS HAVE COME OUT OF THAT INCLUDING THE WORK I DO WITH KENYAN FAMILIES,” SHE TOLD ELLE AFRIQUE ONLINE IN 2013.

However, she has kept her glow on every single day. Even if she is going through a difficult day, she has never let her friends and fans feel low because of it. She’s always smiling and treating us all with witty quotes on her Instagram and Twitter.

From her days as a news anchor at KTN to her senior position at Citizen TV today, she has exhibited growth and maturity. Anne is an epitome of what a contemporary Kenyan girl should look up to.

I talked to the bubbly presenter on balancing motherhood and work life, her love for fashion and stuff she would not do for fame. Here’s the conversation; enjoy!

Interviewer : Anne, as one of the top Kenyan TV personalities, there is pressure that comes with it, especially now that you’re a mom. Your fans expect you to achieve even more. How do you manage to balance work and taking care of your beautiful daughter?

Ann Kiguta: Well I don’t know that I actually balance it. But if it looks that way, great! I’m all about the ‘manageable crazy’. I always have a couple of things going at the same time and to be perfectly honest I could do with another two hours of sleep and a lot more of the spa! But I guess the trick is just learning to prioritize. When you look at the things we think are so important, many of them actually aren’t.

So I weigh things and what I can do without, I do without. I don’t have to be at every event or buzzing new place or take on every project etc. I’ve learnt to differentiate between the temporal and permanent things in my life. My daughter, our relationship- that is permanent. My career is important and deeply fulfilling but not permanent. So the golden rule is never invest the permanent in the temporary.

Interviewer : What are the 3 three things you would never do for fame?

Ann Kiguta: Sacrifice my relationship with my daughter. She comes first in my life. Another thing would be giving up my values and spirituality. It’s what has brought me this far. Finally, I would NEVER undermine my colleagues to get my own way.

Interviewer: You’re known to be a fashion lover. I even met you at the Fashion High Tea earlier this year. Whose fashion do you admire locally and Africa-wide?

Ann Kiguta: I like the local brother-sister style of Papa Petit and Velma Rossa of ‘2manysiblings’. I love the art and culture fusion in what they wear. And if I wasn’t covering politics I’d probably be wearing that because deep down I just want to be in my ripped jeans.

I’m inspired by Kenya’s Zeddie Lukoe who’s based in New York & Wambui Kibue here in Nairobi. Zeddie’s bespoke work is clean, simple yet very elevated. There’s something about a man in a well-tailored suit and its good to see Kenyan men embracing fashion.

I’m crushing on African designers like Mozambique’s Taibo Bacar. He really has an understanding of the feminine form. Shout out to Tanzania’s Jacqueline Kibacha who’s based in the UK. I’m fascinated by her jewelry line and especially the timeless ‘Uhuru wings’.

I’m also loving Nigeria’s Ese Azenabor. She’s based in the States and specializes in embellished looks. And I for one love a little bling here and there…and everywhere. Lol!

Interviewer: Your biggest professional lesson while you’ve been a news anchor?

Ann Kiguta: Anything can happen. And it usually does, especially when you least expect it. You have to be ready at all times and for anything and everything. Once that camera is rolling there is no such thing as “take-two”. You get one chance and once chance only.

Full Victoria Rubadiri Biography

Name: Victoria Rubadiri

Age: 28 years old

Occupation: NTV Anchor and Reporter

Education: Degree Broadcast Journalism

What is the most important lesson you have learnt in your job?

To me, I have learnt to never forget why I am doing this. My core purpose is to tell the stories of other people and to give voice to the voiceless. It is very easy for a person to forget this when on TV; so many people end up chasing fame. For me, I want it to be all about doing what I am held responsible for by society which is telling the truth.

Tell us about a story that you covered and it stuck with you?

There is a feature I did about a lady named Liz. She is a single mother who does one of the most difficult sales jobs. To top it all, she is blind. We followed her every day when we were covering the story and discovered that she was a fiercely independent person who was living life blamelessly. I still talk to her once in a while.

What opportunities have come your way through your line of work?

First, I have had the chance of telling the stories of dozens of amazing people. That has been such a huge opportunity for me. Second, my job has taken me to very many places in Kenya and outside Kenya which is really fun.

Victoria Rubadiri

Victoria Rubadiri

Third and most important, it has given me a platform to mentor young people who have in turn changed my view on life.

What challenges have you met in your line of work?

I wouldn’t really call them challenges, rather aspects of the job. Some time, you prepare for a huge interview only for it to be cancelled. Or maybe there is breaking news that you had not expected and it needs to be aired immediately and you do not have background information. it gets difficult then.

At the end of the day, these instances really stretch me and I get to learn a lot.

If you were not a news anchor, what would you be doing?

I would definitely be a school teacher, without a doubt. Teaching to me is one of the greatest jobs anyone can ever have. You get to impact people directly and mentor them. I love to mentor people, so teaching would definitely give me an equally big opportunity to mentor others.

What do you do on your time out of the lime light?

(Laughs) I honestly take time to just be alone. My job is very involving to a point that I am always surrounded by people. Therefore time alone gives me an opportunity to just relax especially with my daughter.

Which is your favourite book and why?

‘The Pilgrim’s Progress’ by John Bunyan has been my favourite book for a long time. As a born again Christian, this book has been a source of strength in my walk with Christ.

Would you recommend it to others?

I definitely would. It’s a great place to start when you begin your walk with Jesus Christ.

As far as your career is concerned, what keeps you going?

I am a mother to a ten year old girl and she is my biggest motivation. She keeps me going because I want to provide for her to the best of my ability.

Let us talk about your role models and people you look up to?

First Lady of the US Mitchell Obama is definitely one of the people I look up to. CNN’S Christiane Amanpour is also a strong role model to me, especially her work ethic. She is extremely passionate about journalism going as far as covering war zones fearlessly.

What is your most important role in life?

Being a mother is definitely my most important role. It is one of those roles that you do not walk away from. As your child grows, you grow with them. This particular role now defines everything I do with my life and I love it.

In the recent years, you have been termed as a fashion trendsetter by the media. Is it true? And if so, tell us your secret on hacking it.

(Laughs really hard) I honestly am the most laid back person you can ever meet. I am your jeans and the occasional heels kind of a girl. I only dress up for TV because it’s part of my job.

Sharon Mundia: Age, Background and Photos

Sharon Mundia Age and Bio

Sharon Mundia is a 26 year old Kenyan fashion blogger and beauty lover behind This is Ess (www.thisisess.com).

Sharon Mundia has been blogging for a couple years now and what started out as a fun hobby has turned into a great passion for me. “I’m lucky enough to be able to do what I love which, in essence, is to share my personal style and other bits of my life in the hope that it will inspire women of all ages.” She says

Sharon Mundia background

She came to realise is that fashion isn’t just about being trendy and cute, it’s about expressing your character, building your confidence and ultimately celebrating yourself.

Sharon Mundia started blogging regularly three years ago, right after graduating from Monash University in South Africa with a degree in Marketing and Management. She had always had a passion for literature, even receiving a high school literary award, but practicality won out when it came to choosing an academic major. Luckily for her, the background in marketing came in handy when she started to think of her blog, This is Ess, – which started as an online avenue for sharing little pieces of her life – as a platform on which to build her brand.

As her community of readers grew, companies sought her out to advertise their products. Initially, she would feature the free products she received from them without asking for anything in return. Blogging, however, took up time and energy. She realized she would burnout if she couldn’t make it profitable. Her parents, who were concerned about her, gave her a time frame to figure it out. The resulting sense of urgency compelled Mundia to rethink her approach to her blog and to start viewing it as a business.

Turning the blog into a business

Mundia first had to stop accepting freebies as payment for featuring products on her blog. “Imagine Company X chose to advertise at a media house– would they tell the media house: ‘Can we give you five pairs of shoes to run this on your platform?’” she said. “They would never, so I started to think of myself as a platform for companies to share their product.” However, she cautions that a “don’t accept freebies” policy might not work for every blogger. “It depends on where you are,” she said. “If you’re just beginning then you need some flexibility.”

She then came up with a rate card for potential clients. The card clearly spells out the cost of featuring on her blog and social media accounts. As a rule, she gives this rate card to anyone she works with – including pro-bono clients – as a way of communicating the monetary value of her work.

In order to give her site a more clean and professional look, she started working with Victor Peace, a skillful photographer who now takes most of the pictures for This is Ess. For special projects, she also partners with Corrine Munyumoo, a hairstylist, and Muthoni Njoba, a makeup artist, who both ensure that she is camera-ready.

For the most part though, This is Ess is a one woman show. Each post that successfully goes up requires a multistep process that Mundia runs on her own. First, she drafts proposals and budgets to send out to potential clients. Since This is Ess is a lifestyle and fashion blog, she approaches companies that are in those industries and that are a good fit. Once she has received a yes from a client, it is then up to Mundia to communicate with them, organize meetings, and send invoices and post-shoot receipts. Sometimes companies approach her to work with them. She then has to assess whether the products that they are offering align with her brand.

Investing in the blog has also presented Mundia with several other opportunities. It has opened the door to endorsement deals, for example. Mundia is currently a brand ambassador for Store 66 – a Kenyan clothing store, and for the Samsung A Series. Last year, her blogging caught the eye of Capital FM, a leading Nairobi-based radio station that was getting into online content creation. She now shoots videos and writes articles for the station.

To prioritize, Mundia divides her day into neat chunks for each activity. During her most productive morning hours she works on content for Capital FM. Afternoons are saved for emails, planning photo shoots and attending meetings. In the evening, she might have an interview or take photos for her blog. She doesn’t party, after discovering early on that partying on Friday night meant that she’d be recovering on Saturday morning instead of taking pictures for her blog. That is one of the sacrifices that she has to make as a mediapreneur in order to achieve her goals.

 Baby Steps

Would she advise her children to get into a creative career? Without missing a beat, Mundia’s response to this question is “Absolutely.” She would then prepare them for the challenges of the business.

One of the biggest issues she had to deal with was rejection. In the beginning, for every twenty proposals she sent out, only about two were successful, and  up to fifteen were not responded to. Compared to established media in Kenya, blogging is still the new kid on the block. This means that Mundia has to work hard to demonstrate to companies the validity of her blog as an advertising platform.

Sometimes companies say yes but the actual experience of working with them doesn’t match the expectations. “Two weeks ago, I had something that I thought would be huge and then I went into the meeting and it was nothing like I expected,” Mundia said. Other times it takes much longer than planned for things to work out. She initially received a “no”  for the Samsung A series, for example, which turned into a “yes” much later on. On occasion, clients still expect her to feature their products for free. As they see it, they are giving her “content” to blog about. They fail to realize that people are drawn to blogs more for the unique voice of the blogger, rather than for a particular kind of content. Besides, there is no shortage of content when it comes to fashion.

Mundia’s faith in God and the progress she has seen over the years keep her moving in the face of such challenges. “More and more people understand that bloggers are a brand and influencers, and have worked hard to be where they are today,” she said. “So if they agree to work with you on a project, X amount of people will learn about the project and X amount of people could buy the product.”  “Whichever way I look at it, I can feel myself moving forward, and that is fulfilling and I’m so grateful,” added Mundia. In two years she has gone from worrying about the sustainability of her career to owning a car and becoming financially stable. The gains are small, but they add up.

Rejoicing and Ridicule

One challenge of having a personal blog morph into a commercial entity is learning how to balance the blurred boundaries between personal life and business. Just before our interview, for example, a man walked up to Mundia to offer his business card, and a young girl asked to take a selfie with her. Mundia welcomes such attention. It reaffirms that people are reading, and watching whatever she shares online.

The flip side of this is that it comes with its share of critics. “When you let the world into elements of your life, then they have the authority to comment on it, to ridicule it, to hate on it, to love it, to share it, to rejoice in it,” Mundia said. “It [The criticism] hurt the most when it was the first few negative comments.” Such comments have also been fueled by the rise of online Kenyan tabloids, which she now intentionally avoids. “Even tabloids are willing to take on anyone who has some kind of remote online life,” she said. “That also would upset me because I used to think why would you publish something that was so untrue or so mean?”

In dealing with criticism, Mundia has learnt to differentiate between constructive criticism and personal attacks on the internet. She considers the former and not the latter. She is very deliberate about what parts of her life she exposes to the public, especially when it comes to family. “I’ve been very careful only sharing things that I am OK having the world get into,” said Mundia.

In early May, when Mundia announced her engagement on her blog, she thought only a small group of readers would see it. Instead, the massive reaction on the post (which was viewed over 100,000 times in the first 24 hours) led not only to her website crashing for most of the day, but also to her being dubbed a “newsjacker” by a national newspaper. The event illuminated Mundia’s impact and her potential as an ideal partner for companies wishing to reach an  internet savvy youth audience.

However, If she had to do it over, she would not announce her engagement on the blog the same way. One of the lessons she learnt from the whole experience is that it’s better to enjoy those private moments for a little while before making them public. “I’m not sure if looking back I would have announced it. I thought at first it would just be my circle of readers and then it grew into something more and I thought: I’ve exposed a really sentimental part of my life and people can comment on it– ridicule and rejoice– and that was scary,” she said. “If for instance I had a baby today, would I share the story on my platform tomorrow? Maybe not. But in a few weeks– I just might.”

Future prospects

Mundia acknowledges that she is privileged in many ways. For one, her family has been willing and able to support her in her journey. Her father, a journalist himself, gave her a lot of advice when she was starting off, especially when it came to decisions about building her brand. Being based in Kenya allowed her to have a greater impact than she would have had had she been blogging from outside the continent. Finally, she has had the freedom to pursue her creative endeavours while young and before starting a family of her own.

In the long run, Mundia hopes to expand This is Ess into a full-fledged lifestyle and media outfit that brings together creators from across Africa. She also hopes to launch a line of fashion and beauty products in her name. In the meantime, she plans on blogging more regularly, and growing her brand and following.

On a personal level, she would love to live a fulfilled existence. “I have always yearned for a great life,” said Mundia who commits to doing everything with passion. “I want a fantastic, mindblowing life, to travel with my friends, to see this world in ways I have not seen it yet… a happy family and to be financially secure.”

Sharon Mundia gives her thoughts

Each morning you wake up with a blank canvas and just like an artist, you choose to paint a picture of yourself that you then share with the world. My hope for my blog is to inspire women around Africa to be the best damn artists they could possibly be.

Maina Kageni Biography

Maina hosts Classic 105’s breakfast show ‘Maina In The Morning’ alongside Mwalimu King’ang’i. He wakes you up to a fun filled show where humor and relationships are part of the recipe. He is a staunch supporter of English Premiere League side Manchester United and is also a professional golfer.

Maina Kageni, together with his co-host, Mwalimu Kingangi (Daniel Ndambuki) are the most tuned in radio hosts in the country.

Most ladies love his manly voice while men detest him highly and if you’ve listened to his show you will agree with me that his abilities to engage with the audience is beyond measure. Maina is one of the radio personalities that is highly paid and has different side hustles that add to his wealth.

Apart from minting large amounts of money from his radio show at classic fm, Maina also emcees at selected events where he is paid huge chunks of money.  He is like one large mall where you find everything. Maina is also a business man majoring in real estate businesses with houses in Miami and USA. This is just half of what he owns less the luxurious cars that he drives. Maina has acquired a lot of wealth through the different things that he does.

Maina Kageni Wealth

It is said that successful people make and attract money, and not that people who make money become successful.

This means they bring success to what they do.Maina Kageni of Classic FM is a man who knows how to make money.

He believes that when one gets his attitude toward money straight, it will help straighten out almost every other area in his or her life.

Mr Kageni is a man with big cash. He has invested in real estate in Kenya and abroad; he has residential houses in Nairobi and a couple of condos in the city of Miami, Florida.

He also owns a modelling agency in Lagos with one of the P-Square brothers, among other enterprises.

And although he does not give the figure of what he is earning as a radio host, he admits that he is getting “A very good salary”.

He shared his thoughts on money and investment.

Are you a rich man?

It depends on what you mean by ‘rich’. If being rich means going for holidays any time I want, then I am a rich man. If it means helping others, then I am a rich man and if it means having no money to buy a building worth Sh100 million at Karen then I am poor. Some people say I have a lot of money, but I think I just earn good money and live a quality life.

Are you a spender or saver?

I spend and I save. One thing people fail to recognise is the importance of a budget. You have to plan for every coin you spend. With a good budget plan, you are able to spend well and save your money too.

How many bank accounts do you have?

About eight.

Does the holiday season ever get you by surprise?

Never. I respect my budget and I know where my money goes. I have what I call a holiday bank account. I set aside some money each month for it. I never dig into my personal savings to celebrate the holiday seasons. It never happens because I budget for holidays.

Does having money make you happy?

Yes, having money makes me happy. Those who say money cannot buy happiness don’t know where to shop. Money is good; in fact, lacking it is the source of evil in the world. We should all work hard and try making good money.

How much money do you spend in a day?

About Sh4,000, which translates to about Sh120,000 per month. I budget for this too.

How much do you spend on your haircut?

Sh1,000 every week.

Which is your best investment ever?

Real estate.

And which is your worst investment?

I still regret why I bought certain shares. I think has been the worst financial decision I have made in my life so far.

Do you prefer property or pension?

Both.

Do you use credit cards?

Never! I prefer debit cards. But I have one credit card for emergency situations. I think shopping on debit cards is better because you use only what is in your account.

Do you invest in shares?

Yes, I do.

How much is your Hummer?

I bought it at Sh6 million.

Have you ever been broke?

Broke? I have not experienced that. Sometimes, however, I come across a good deal worth around Sh500,000 and ignore it because of lacking that amount of money at the time.

How much is your watch?

I bought it at 1, 800 US dollars, which translates to about Sh144,000.

How about the sport’s T Shirt you are wearing?

When it comes to clothes I rarely purchase them locally. I prefer buying clothes abroad because they are original and more stylish. I bought it at 120 dollars, which is equivalent to Sh9,600.

Do you have any weakness when it comes to money?

I am too generous, I remember giving a friend Sh600,000 to work on a project and improve his financial position. I gave it to him and I was not expecting it back.

Do you give back to the society?

Lulu Hassan Biography

Lulu, who is the first born in a family of three girls, grew up in Mombasa.

“Being the first born, I did not face any hardships while growing up; I was taken to one of the best schools in Mombasa – Aga Khan Academy,” she said.

Lulu, who hosts Nipashe Wikendi with Kanze Dena, has had a long journey to get to where she is today.

About Lulu Hassan

She’s got Seychellois roots

Her mother, Mariam Abu, passed away in 2007 after being unwell, and Lulu had to take care of her two younger sisters.

“It wasn’t difficult taking my sisters to school since mum left us with some wealth. She had a real estate business which I began managing upon her demise. I’d been helping earlier, so it was not difficult to take over,” revealed Lulu

She trained as cabin crew hostess

Before pursuing journalism, Lulu trained as a cabin crew hostess, human resource manager and ticketing officer at Salrene Travel Operations College.

“When I landed a radio job in Mombasa, I thought it would be good to have journalism skills. So I went back to school and studied the course,” said Lulu.

She used to read English news

Back in 2008, Lulu was a household name in Mombasa thanks to her news presenter job at Radio Salaam. Interestingly, she used to read news in English and not Swahili.

So, how did she transition to TV?

“When I was a presenter at Radio Salaam in 2008, a KTN cameraman informed me there was crisis at their station. Two of their Swahili anchors were going for maternity leave, and they needed someone to step in. He asked me to try my luck. Being a risk taker, I went for a screen test and I made the cut.”

She wishes her mother could see her on TV.

There’s nothing like a parent’s approval, and Lulu wishes her late mother could see her read news. Her lowest moment was when she had just landed her first TV job and she thought about her mother while she was on air.

“It was my first day as an anchor, and I got flustered on air when I thought about my mother. I felt so sad. There I was as an anchor, but mum wasn’t alive to celebrate me – all along she had wished to see me reading news on national television,” Lulu recalls.

She doesn’t care for fame.

Many people would get caught up in the fame that comes with being on prime time TV, but not Lulu.

“I don’t see being a news anchor as a big deal. Fame does not get into my head. Anybody at home can send me to the shop, and I would go without feeling I am too much of a celebrity for that.”

Lulu Hassan’s Husband

She met her husband, Rashid Abdalla, at work.Lulu is married to QTV presenter Rashid Abdalla, and she met him back at Radio Salaam. He’d heard her voice on Radio, and he was eager to meet her in person. This was just after Lulu lost her mother, and he was there for her through her grief.

“When I remembered my mother I would cry a lot and Rashid was always there to offer me a shoulder to lean on. With time I grew so close to him. The rest is history,” she recalls smiling.

Lulu revealed that since then she has always found a friend in Rashid. Together they are blessed with two sons: Jibran, 4, and Irfan, 1.

Lulu Hassan Wedding-Lulu Hassan Wedding Photos

When Lulu tied the knot with Rashid, her neighbours and friends came in large numbers to celebrate their union.

“When Rashid and I wedded, most guests were people whom I did not know. Out of love they came in large numbers to celebrate my big day,” tells Lulu.

Since her late mother was not there to ‘give her away’ as is customary, her neighbours and friends stepped in. For this reason, the soft spoken newsreader describes Kenyans as loving and caring people.Lulu Hassan Wedding Photos Lulu Hassan Wedding Photos 2

Lulu Hassan Accident

She was involved in a road crash in 2010.Back in 2010, while working at KTN, Lulu was involved in a terrible road accident. Her left leg was injured, and it is still affected now. The injury keeps her from joining her studio guests in dance.

Getrude Mungai Profile

My name is Getrude Mungai, I am a Lifestyle designer on bedroom matters and relationships, a wife, mother, an author/blogger, TV and radio host and a motivational speaker. This year I will celebrate my 17th year in marital bliss with the same man I have had a relationship with for 22 years and we are blessed with two sons.

Born and raised on the Kenyan coast, I am privileged to belong to the Mijikenda sub tribe that prepares their girls from puberty on the realities of sex and intimacy in marriage. I have a wealth of African traditional knowledge from various tribes and communities in East Africa and beyond. I have also travelled extensively and learned from the Indians the art of Kama Sutra and the secret of the Middle East from a Harlem trainer. I belong to a network of sexologist, and I constantly keep abreast of developments in the sex and intimacy field and read widely on the western sex therapy. With knowledge from the West, East and Africa as well as experiences and practical experiments in my own marriage, the end product is a customized and tailor made product for our modern African society.

To date I have had sessions with thousands of women locally and abroad as well as a few hundred men. I have had seminars with churches, multinational corporations and banks among others. I used to write about sex, romance and relationship for the Sunday Standard newspaper (EVE weekly magazine) my page is titled “between the sheets”. I also wrote for the Nairobi star newspaper for over a year – my column was dubbed “Sex aunty”. I have been featured on EVE, True Love magazines for women as well Adam magazine for men, not to mention Drum and Parents magazine. The Nation, Taifa Leo and Standard Newspapers have also published my work and done features on me. I have also co-hosted a morning drive show on Kiss FM for a month and appeared on severally Citizen TV’s breakfast show, KBC TV, NTV and KTN TV stations. The BBC world radio services did a profile and also highlighted my work on their website.

At the moment I have I host a radio show ‘Bahari ya mapenzi’ (ocean of love), this is an adult-only programme where I address issues related to sex and intimacy. Three years ago, I hosted one of the hottest shows ever seen in Kenya titled ‘Connect’ on K24 TV station, where I advise couples on relationships as well as sex and intimacy. One of the episodes from the show has over 2 million views on YouTube. The Glamour Magazine – UK, featured my work in 2008 and voted me as one of the women making a positive change in the world. In 2012 a German TV station featured my work as well as the impact I am having on families. I was also privileged to be invited to do seminars in Uganda, Tanzania and South Africa, where I appeared on TV and radio stations as well as newspapers and magazines in the counties. Of these countries I have ongoing interviews with Kaya FM of Johannesburg South Africa.

My blog gets about 500,000 hits a month.

It’s my firm conviction that one must give back to society as they receive from the same community. I also believe that one must have a mentor and in return have a mentee. To this end, my charity work involves volunteering at the Kenya Cancer Association, where was treasurer in 2013. I am also the founder and patron of Fadhili Mschana Trust, whose motto is “facilitate, motivate and mentor” poor rural school girls and boys. We provide the girls with sanitary pads and underwear and in the process motivate them to study harder through mentorship. As for the boys we involve them in sports like football and farming. We strive to give them life skills as opposed to handouts.

Kobi Kihara Biography

Photographer, producer and TV presenter Kobi Kihara was recently hosted on NTV This Morning by Wangui Wachira, and this is an excerpt of the interview

Born 31 years ago, Kobi grew up in Kenya as the youngest of five children, one boy and four girls. Her parents were in and out of the country all the time, and when she was 15, they decided to move from Kenya to Washington DC in the US to keep the family together. “The move had actually been in the works since I was 12, so for three years I had been preparing mentally for it, imagining what it would be like from what I had seen on TV.”

She was to attend a public high school, but the summer before she was to join, a shooting incident at the school changed her educational course and she was enrolled at a private international high school.

Here is an interview with Kobi Kihara

What was her experience like studying abroad?

“At the time, I didn’t like the high school experience because the transition was quite hard at the beginning. It was a huge opportunity for the entire family, but once we got there it was so different and foreign. Looking back, however, I realise it was fantastic to be in an international setting. I was the only Kenyan and I had friends from different parts of the world.

How did her family react to her suggestion of studying arts?

I told my parents that I wanted to study the performing arts and to be an actress. To a family of overachievers, it was one of those ‘Huh?’ moments.

“To make them understand what the programme was about, I broke down the details of the course to my parents. It helped that there is a creative streak running through my mum’s side of the family so, with their blessing, I was soon off to Newcastle University in the UK.

When did she begin photography?

After a year and a half, she returned to Newcastle to complete her degree. However, her graduation day coincided with her sister’s wedding back in Kenya, so she missed out on the ceremony and came home to share in the celebrations.

“I had just started getting interested in photography and had always wanted to work with children, so during this period I volunteered at Nyumbani Children’s Home before going back to Washington.

What happened after that?

I took some time off when I had finished my studies, to figure things out.”
This time off saw Kobi actively job hunting. She was able to land acting roles in three small films, two shot in the US and one in the UK. That is when I decided I wanted to be behind the scenes; to have control and have a say about what was going on in front of the camera. When you are only in front of it, your opinion doesn’t count.

What kind of jobs was she doing to make ends meet?

The time off also took her to Paris, France, for three months, where she modelled briefly and did some photography.

When she got back, she took on a part-time bartending gig.

How did that work?

my sister talked to me about following through with my photography, so I enrolled at a nearby school for some courses. I would attend these in the morning and bartend in the evening. In 2004, I went back to school full time in Toronto to do my master’s in film and TV production. At graduation, everyone I had been studying with was working – apart from me. I just couldn’t find permanent employment.

What did she do?

I volunteered with the Smithsonian Kaplan Institute and the Kennedy Centre, did freelance photography, but still it was a struggle and quite challenging.

“Later, I landed a temporary job with the International Organisation for Migration in the US, assisting with overseeing the Iraqi elections. There I saw the beauty of working hard and getting something out of your work. For a long time I was afraid of structure, but I was now happy to be productive, earning a salary, having benefits – the full nine yards.

She lost that job, how did she handle it?

The job came to an end after three months and Kobi found herself back at square one – job hunting, broke and disillusioned, armed with qualifications but still with no paid work forthcoming.

What made her return to Kenya?

I fell in love with Kenya again. There was a lot of scepticism and anxiety over my decision, because I had no tangible prospects to come back to and nobody could understand why I wanted to return.

How was the job hunt back?

As I had been putting out my CV and all my networks were active, Tom Mshindi contacted me while I was still in Washington about a producer position. I interviewed for it and, as I landed back in Kenya, there was an air of expectancy, as at least I would be earning. My mother was with me on this trip and we were staying with two of my sisters who were here.

Did she get the job?

I did not get the job. The disappointment was overwhelming. My mum asked me if I wanted to go back with her to Washington, but I was here to stay. I looked for a job everywhere I possibly could.

When did she get her first break?

My big break came through my photography, when a friend of mine introduced me to the management at the Windsor Golf and Country Club to do photography for their property. Then I got work with UNDP and, from there, the jobs just started coming in.

How did she land a job at citizen?

With things finally falling into place, a call from Citizen TV. I didn’t give it much thought, because I had got so used to doors being shut to me, so it was one of those ‘OK, I’ll do it’ things, but I wasn’t expecting anything to come from it.”

A month later, the station called to offer her a producer position as they were launching breakfast TV.

What is her opinion on being poached by Radio Africa?

No offence to any single individual, but the media industry in Kenya is lacking in professional structures that properly address under-appreciation, unfair compensation and poor talent recognition.

As a news anchor and studio producer at Radio Africa, I get full responsibility on the deliverables. I am part of a young and creative team, which is great. My role is to come up with programme ideas for the station, and I want to create more.

What is her most memorable gig as a photographer?

Her first memorable gig was the visit of then Sen. Barrak Obama to Kenya, on this particular day he was tree planting with Nobel peace prize winner Wangari Maathai, as she was pushing and shoving with other journalists to get the best shot, the senator stopped and commended her for being a great photographer

What’s the biggest lesson she has learnt in life?

Never take yourself too seriously unless you really, really have to. The moment you do, you over-think everything and then chances of you messing it up are greater.

Tony Gachoka Biography

Tony Gachoka is a Kenyan Political activist. Most Kenyans first came to hear of Tony Gachoka during the late 80’s and early 90’s when he published an alternative press publication known as the Sunday Post, which was more of an expose by the way.

Tony Gachoka is a man of many titles. Activist, self-proclaimed political strategist, media consultant, the list is endless.

Tony cursed after he allegedly used the family’s coffee estate plantation title deed to secure a loan of Sh100 million from Trust Bank. Gachoka started his own publication known as Sunday Post that targeted and exposed corrupt Asians. He went on to con the likes of Mukesh, Gohil, Ajay Shah, Hrban Singh and Raju Sangani millions of shillings.

Gachoka found himself in trouble after a court sentenced him for six months for contempt of court and sub judice. His publication folded shortly after the court slapped Sunday Post with a fine of Sh1 million. He failed miserably when he contested for the Juja constituency parliamentary seat after he garnered only 200 votes in the nominations before decamping to Safina party where he only managed to garner 1,000 votes in the 2002 general elections.

His mother reportedly cursed him for the loss of the multi-million coffee estate and rumors that he engaged in hom@s#xu@lity when he was imprisoned at the Kamiti Maximum Prison. He is said to continue with this habit to date. Gachoka is a hustler who was allegedly dumped by his wife after failing to pay schools for their children at the prestigious Brookside school totaling Sh3.5 million.
