Joel Mwale Biography, Wealth and Awards

$

0

Joel Mwale is also the Founder and Director of Skydrop Enterprise, a clean water supply company in Kenya. He created Skydrop when he was 16, which now has 32 employees in Kenya, with distribution across Kenya and exports to Uganda and Tanzania.

Education

Joel had attended African Leadership Academy (ALA), a two-year residential academy that is training the future leaders of Africa. ALA accepts about 100 students a year from a pool of 6,000 applicants, which makes it more difficult to attend than Stanford.

Career

At 16, Mwale changed the lives of more than 5,000 people in a community in Kitale when he helped them access clean drinking water.

He had contracted dysentery from contaminated water during a particularly dry season in Kitale. And when lying on his hospital bed recovering from the very serious bout of diarrhoea, the health risk in his community sparked an idea.

With savings of about Sh8,000, the knowledge of physics acquired at Friends School Kamusinga and some help from volunteers, Mwale built a borehole on some community farmland.

He installed a pump that would allow extraction of the water, providing clean, drinking water to hundreds of households in his village.

He was forced to drop out of Friends School since his family was unable to pay for his tuition. But this did not dampen his spirits.

He set out to find tuition fees and earn a little extra to support his family.

Coincidently, the idea for SkyDrop came to maturation when Mwale was caught in a rainstorm.

“I remember it was in April during one of the heavy rain seasons in Kitale. I was just walking as the rain poured and happened to spot a closed yoghurt shop. Next to it was a water tank that was storing the rainwater from the gutters of the roof.

After convincing the owner of the yoghurt shop to lease him the location, Mwale set out to find a purifying machine to filter the rainwater. He soon discovered that this piece of equipment was quite expensive.

The next three and half months saw Mwale knock on the doors of local banks and NGOs for funding, but they declined.

He turned to his 20-acre piece of family land, which had been lying fallow for years. He approached his mother about selling it, an idea she was initially opposed to. Eventually, however, he convinced her.

With the proceeds from the sale, Mwale bought a water purification machine for Sh430,000, and paid for the cost of operation to produce drinking water.

“We used to harvest rain water and focus on production during wet season. During the dry spells, we would market our product.”

Half a litre of water retailed at Sh17, and a litre at Sh31.

Initially, SkyDrop was only able at sell about 10 bottles a day as a result of significant competition from already established drinking water bottlers.

But after persistent campaigns, sales climbed, with the company making Sh25.6 million in profits last year, Mwale said.

He added that he used some of the cash he made to replace the family land he sold to fund his business.

The success of this project and the unfortunate turn of events that occurred afterwards ultimately led to the creation of SkyDrop Enterprises.

This is the social enterprise that has earned him global accolades.

In addition to providing clean water to his village, he skillfully converted the idea into a booming venture by bottling the water for sale across western Kenya and into Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda and South Sudan.

He had also just won a Google award (Zeitgeist Young Minds 2012) for being one of the Top 10 Brightest Young Minds in the World. The award saw him spend a lot of time in USA’s Silicon Valley. He spent time with people like Larry Page, the co-founder and chief executive of Internet search engine giant Google, and Sir Tim Berners-Lee, best known for inventing the world wide web.

Mwale is among a crop of young entrepreneurs who have overcome tremendous odds, and instead of crying foul over the unemployment crisis in Kenya, have gone the extra mile to create jobs.

Unemployment has gone up progressively from 6.7 per cent in 1978 to 40 per cent today.

He is now on a journey to building an African Google, Apple or Facebook. With other partners, he has founded Gigavia.com, a company that he says will likely offer solutions for how institutions can deliver education materials and also provide a platform for veteran entrepreneurs to mentor youngsters.

The company has offices in Kenya, South Africa and in Silicon Valley. It currently employees tens of programmers and administrative staff.

Joel Mwale Wealth

Joel Mwale, 21, has already sold a company for over US$500,000, travelled the world, and rubbed shoulders with several presidents.

Heshan de Silva Biography, Wealth and Award

Heshan de Silva, CEO, De Silva Group (Kenya). The De Silva Group is the holding company for DSGVenCap, a firm that makes seed investments in Kenyan entrepreneurs with innovative ideas for new businesses, with the specific aim of reducing poverty in the country. De Silva also mentors young Kenyans, sharing business success tips and personal advice.

Education

De Silva graduated from high school at the age of 16, and immediately went on to university. His parents were reasonably well-off, so they sent him to the US, where he chose the University of Miami, Florida – for its climate.

Career

Heshan de Silva, 25, is the CEO of VenCap, a venture capital fund invested in 17,000 businesses. De Silva first tried his hand at business with less than $200 and has built a multi-million dollar enterprise over the last seven years. The portfolio of companies under the De Silva Group spans various sectors including commodities, technology, renewable energy, insurance and agribusiness.

Heshan de Silva became famous after he was featured on K24’s Young Rich. People love inspirational stories and a twenty something billionaire is just the perfect bet.

For Njenga Karume’s case, we know he started by selling charcoal, we know the story of Equity bank founders, Tuskys founders etc… but surprisingly, Heshan’s story is very vague.

Apparently, he started the de Silva Group a few years ago with only $200. The version I’ve heard has it that he sold some idea to an insurance company, but I know neither the idea nor the insurance company.

He says that he invests in startups, but really not much information is out there.

According to him, DSGVenCap – the company he owns, has invested in over 17,000 businesses, none of which is known.

Here’s an excerpt from Brandkenya.go.ke

Seven years ago De Silva invested his 10 000 Kenyan shilling ($116) allowance from his parents to start a small business selling travel insurance to the poor. Going for as little as KSh5 – less than five US cents – it was bundled with long-distance bus tickets and could be bought via mobile phone. By the end of the year he had made KSh90-million, over a million US dollars.

After earning his first million, De Silva moved on to financing ingenious ideas. His DSGVenCap has so far invested in 22 000 people and has created 17 000 businesses.

After earning his first million, De Silva moved on to financing ingenious ideas. His DSGVenCap has so far invested in 22 000 people and has created 17 000 businesses. “This is the ideas sector, where you can convert ideas into viable companies.”

Today one of the youngest venture capitalists in Africa, De Silva chooses the projects carefully, and has grown the De Silva Group into one of the region’s most enterprising entities. It has holdings in commodities, technology, renewable energy, insurance, robotics, advertising, hospitality, fashion, rural road construction, hardware and agribusiness, and works with major East African corporations such as Equity Bank, Housing Finance Corp, Scanad, and East African Breweries Limited.

Heshan de Silva

Heshan de Silva

DSGVenCap invests an average of $10 000 to $15 000 in each idea, and helps the entrepreneurs it funds to execute their ideas. So far, company and its beneficiaries have created jobs for some 70 000 people.

Going through his Twitter timeline, you may be forgiven to think that motivational speaking is his full time job. From Mount Kenya University to Nailab to Hillcrest, everyone wants his services.

Several bloggers have written about how his riches story does not add up, and with his PR firm leaving him, this is getting interesting.

His story has been posted on the infamous ‘Buyer Beware’ Facebook page, with some people already branding him a ‘con man’, but I would rather not go that road until he gives his story properly. Perhaps a clear blog post will do.

Wealth

He is Kenya’s youngest dollar multimillionaire and founder of DSGVenCap, a venture capital firm that he started four years ago and which today has a net worth of almost $1bn.

Award and Recognitions

In 2008, De Silva was selected by the US Congress as one of Kenya’s Brightest Young Leaders. The university dropout seeks to use his businesses to reduce poverty in Kenya from 60% to 40% over the next five years.

Ahmed Abdi born in Garissa County is the CEO of Amana Insurance Brokers Limited. Ahmed Abdi is an exuberant young man whose contentment with life .

Education

Ahmed Abdi attended Dadaab and Al Farouq Primary Schools. Ahmed did well in his Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examinations in 2002 and was admitted to Bura Secondary School. Unfortunately, in 2003, he was forced to abandon his education due to lack of school fees.

Background

After dropping out of school at the age of 16, Abdi took on the heavy responsibility of supporting his family. Taking up any odd job that came his way, the third born and the eldest son in a family of nine children, Ahmed was the sole breadwinner.

Career

From a matatu tout, a novice garage mechanic, to a truck turn boy and even a part-time driver in Garissa town, nothing was too small for him. In 2008, while going on with his daily activities, Ahmed received a call from his cousin Nageye Mohamud Dahir, that forever changed his life.

Ahmed took the job positively and worked hard, earning Sh6,000 a month, sending Sh4,000 home and surviving on Sh2,000.

His tenacity saw him rise through the ranks to a marketing executive and later on a general manager. While working at his cousin’s firm, he returned to school and enrolled for the Kenya Certificate of Secondary School (KCSE) as a private student.

He passed his KCSE exams and proceeded to pursue several courses including insurance, marketing and strategic management. In 2011, Ahmed took another leap and registered his own company, Al Amana Insurance Agency, which later became Amana Insurance Brokers Limited-with a friend as a partner. Amana was the first agency to register with Takaful Insurance (a Sharia compliant insurance firm) and introduced a private motor insurance policy. Since then, Takaful Insurance became Amana’s lifeline, winning several awards as the best agent.

Ahmed Abdi

Ahmed Abdi

Amana is a mid-size company with an annual turn-over of Sh8million from selling policies from major underwriters in the country. Some of their biggest clients include, international Rescue committee, ACTED and other NGOs working today in Somalia.

“It’s been a great journey, but I am not yet done,” he says. “As a brokerage firm I sell other people’s policies, my dream is to grow into a fully-fledged insurance firm where I underwrite my own policies,”

His plan is to target the youth, small-scale traders, and other untapped sectors. Insurance firms only focus on the middle class and ignore the potential of the youth both as customers and as employees, his dream is to tap into this untouched market.

Ahmed reckons that it is unfortunate that most corporates look at employees as liabilities rather than assets, that is why they are fired the minute businesses start making losses. “If you treat your employees well and share the profits with them, you will never make losses,” he says.

Awards

In 2011, he was awarded the Best Agency Award and was recently named the Best Insurance Broker by Association of Insurance Brokers of Kenya (AIBK).

Asim Shah Biography

$

0

Asim Shah is the Founder and Director of Greener Pastures Ltd, the host of the GMC in Kenya. GMC is the world’s largest management & strategy competition and has been running since 1980.

Education

Asim Shah has a Masters in Engineering in Manufacturing Engineering & Management from the University of Warwick.

Asim Shah Career

He specialises in management systems design, wilderness event logistics, youth coaching and talent development. He is the youngest serving member of the Rhino Charge organising committee and a Director at Tarpo Industries Ltd. He founded Greener Pastures in 2013 to explore new ways of talent acquisition within Nairobi and pivoted in 2014 to become a boutique consultancy focusing on human capacity development through experiential training.

Asim Shah Interview

Asim Shah, tell us about yourself.

I’m an engineer by profession, manufacturing engineering specifically and now increasingly curious about organizational health, design and behavior. I’m still looking for my calling but I think it lies somewhere between engineering and human resource betterment. Outside of work I’m a hobby wildlife photographer and apparently a skilled off-road driver!

What 3 traits define you.

Intelligent, Risk-taker and Conscientious

What inspires and motivates you?

Overcoming seemingly impossible challenges. I did a psychometric assessment some time ago and it suggested one of my motivators is the desire to make money. I’m inspired by engineering wonders and odd as it sounds “efficiency”.

Tell me how you made it as one of Kenya’s Top 40 under 40 men in 2015

The top 40 under 40 are selected based on their impact on society and as future role models. It’s not about the top business personalities or the richest. My style of coaching and mentoring and also introducing the Global Management Challenge into the country for a very specific purpose got me recognized as someone trying to make an impact on the youth of the country. I’ve always been a role model and an inspirer for ideas. I’m looking at what I can do to transform our talent pools.

Asim Shah

Asim Shah

I would love to know more about GMC

The Global Management Challenge is the world’s largest online strategy and management competition. It’s a gamified opportunity to run a very realistic but virtual business without the real-world risks. The GMC gives participants the experience of C-suite decision making, in-depth analysis of financial and operational data and for the determined ones it forces them to reflect and action on the consequences of their decisions.

What influenced the initiative to introduce GMC to Kenya?

I took part in the GMC while at university in the UK and it opened up the world of management to me. I got validation of what I always knew but could never practice – that everything is connected. The smallest change somewhere or what you believe is the least impactful may have a huge bearing on another part of the business. That kind of experience is invaluable and for that reason a group of friends explored the option of introducing the GMC to Kenya way back in 2009. We didn’t believe the market was financially ready then and the GMC has a dependency on high-speed internet, which in 2009 was not available. Fast-forward to 2013 when we re-explored the viability of bringing the GMC to Kenya given that broad-band had arrived, statistics of half-baked graduates were being churned out and I was experiencing challenges in recruiting literally anyone who had an idea about management. I was convinced that GMC would have an impact on participants’ managerial skills and decision making conviction. I think we’ve achieved that impact already.

Who can apply for the competition?

The competition is open to all at the moment. In some countries its restricted to students or managers but in Kenya we’ve kept it open. Students complain about not getting practical experience – the GMC solves that to an extent. Managers complain about the C-suite’s ways of doing things – give them a taste of what the C-suite is like!

How do the participants apply for the competition?

We’ll have an online registration process accessible from the gmckenya.com website. The team captain should first register the team and then invite the team members. If you’re paying by MPESA then you can do that straight away on the same page itself. By the time we open up registration you should even be able to do it on a smartphone.

What is your plan for the future of GMC?

I’d like to see strong corporate and educational institutions come onboard to acknowledge the impact the GMC will have on their learning and talent development. In some countries like Mexico and Portugal, the GMC forms a unit as part of some bachelors’ degrees – students earn credits for participating. I think that would transform the experience of education for any student in this country. We have the contractual rights to host across East Africa so once we’re rolling successfully in Kenya we will look to establish in Uganda probably.

If you could go back and give your 21 year-old self valuable piece of advice, what would you say?

Be fearless. Inspiration, intellect and character are built from the experiences we go through, understand and reflect upon.

Jesse Moore is co-founder and managing director of M-KOPA, a Nairobi-headquartered company that offers credit to low-income earners to buy solar power systems. Jesse was a Managing Director of Signal Point Partners and the director of the GSMA Development Fund.

Education

Jesse Moore holds an MBA from Oxford University (Skoll Scholar) and a BA from UNC Chapel Hill (Morehead Scholar).

Career

Jesse Moore moved to Kenya in 2010 to start M-KOPA and has overseen the company’s growth to nearly 500 employees. Prior to M-KOPA, Jesse was the Director of the GSM Association Development Fund in London, where he worked with mobile network operators in Africa and Asia to adopt new business models that drive business growth and benefit low-income consumers, such as mobile money.

M-KOPA Solar saves off-grid customers money by replacing kerosene with affordable renewable energy. In less than 2 years since its launch, M-KOPA has connected more than 100,000 homes to solar power across Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, and is adding over 10,000 more homes each month. Based on this growth M-KOPA was selected by Bloomberg as the top “new energy pioneer” worldwide for 2014.

His business was inspired by the fact that Kenyans spend billions of shillings every year to buy kerosene for domestic lighting. It was then when M-Kopa Solar was born. Since 2011, his lighting business has connected 250,000 homes in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. How it works is that the users deposit only Ksh. 2,999 and then pay 40 shillings daily to own a full lighting system. His initiative has won several awards, including the Zayed Future Energy Prize (1.5 million USD cash prize), Global Cleantech 100, Fast Company Top 10 Most Innovative Companies in Africa as well as Fortune’s Top 50 Companies Changing the World.

Jesse Moore Awards and Recognitions

Based on this growth, M-KOPA was selected by Bloomberg as the top “New Energy Pioneer” worldwide for 2014 and winner of the Zayed Future Energy Prize 2015, and has also secured its fourth round of investment funding through a $12.45 million equity and debt deal, led by LGT Venture Philanthropy.

Interview with Jesse Moore

1. What was your first job?

In a bowling lane. I was probably 19, in my first year in university, and it was really low pay. I think it was just over US$4 an hour. But it was enough that if I worked a whole shift I might be able to afford two or three beers on Friday night.

2. What parts of your job keep you awake at night?

Besides the lights? It’s the people that we haven’t yet met that we need to bring into the business, and how to find them and how to create the right roles to keep growing the business as quickly as we can. I know the business is successful and it will continue to be successful. But if we want to be successful in the millions of [users] rather than in the thousands of we still have, there are some big roles to fill and I want to make sure we find those people. We have 700 staff now. I think we should be 2,000 in two years.

3. Who has had the biggest impact on your career and why?

My parents – they really encouraged me to take risks and do whatever I wanted.

Jesse Moore

Jesse Moore

Growing up I was in a fortunate position of not having expectations of “you will be a doctor” – and I was able to find my own path. They have been very supportive to me moving far away and starting a business despite all the risks.

4. What is the best professional advice you’ve ever received?

Work hard, enjoy what you are doing and everything will be okay. It’s very simple and I didn’t believe it for many years. I think there is truth to it [but] of course you have to make tough calls and things aren’t always easy. I think we tend to worry too much about everything working out – but if you work hard, you enjoy what you are doing and you treat people well, the world is typically okay.

5. The top reasons why you have been successful in business?

I hope empathy is a quality that I have. It has helped me in the business in terms of understanding what it is our customers go through [and] why they want something better. As you build a business you have your customers, your employees, your investors and other stakeholders. Try to empathise with what it is people are looking to get out of the business. A staff member wants their salary but they also want to know how they can grow here, how they will become CEO of M-KOPA one day, and what is it they can do to advance their career. Those are totally legitimate concerns for our staff. So empathy, which is to say understanding the needs of all stakeholders in the company, is important.

I think it is also building a business that actually has purpose because it helps its customers. Our customers will save $750 over four years [using our solar products] compared with burning kerosene. Even though we make money they too make a lot more money. Focusing your business on helping somebody leads to success.

6. Where’s the best place to prepare for leadership? Business school or on the job?

Not business school. I went to Oxford which was great for me because I met my two co-founders there. Business school has its benefits, but I would never make an MBA qualification a requirement for any job. On the job training is what matters. Even life experience matters to me a lot more than any degree.

7. How do you relax?

I have a three-year-old son and my wife so we spend time at home. I like to get out of the city whenever we can and do a little bit of camping and biking. Being in the outdoors – where there is not so much noise – I find that extremely relaxing.

8. By what time in the morning do you like to be at your desk?

Around 7 to 7:30am which gives me about an hour to get things done before the office heats up. But I’m not an early bird – I don’t get up at 4am.

9. Your favourite job interview question?

“How many matatus (privately operated public transport vehicles) are there in Nairobi?” The trick of that question is there is no correct answer. It’s more a logic test. How would you go about answering the question and you can’t use your phone or the internet. You have to use some logic. It was the first question I was asked in my first job interview although it wasn’t matatus. I was in New York so I was asked: “How many yellow taxis are there in New York?”

10. What is your message to Africa’s aspiring business leaders and entrepreneurs?

Focus on big problems. Big problems are also big opportunities. We had some guys come through here a few months ago from Silicon Valley who have been a part of some of the biggest companies the world now knows. One of the guys said to the crowd: ‘Back 30 years ago in Silicon Valley we had not done it either, now it’s your turn’. There is no reason to say that Nairobi or Kenya or Africa can’t build the next generation of Fortune 500 companies.

Interview with Darshan Chandaria

1. What was your first job?

When I joined Cardiff University in 2004 I was eager to engage in any form of work. My first job was to lay out catalogues at the stadium for the local football league matches. I earned the equivalent of $5 an hour. I was 18 years old at the time. Although it was winter and very cold to be outside laying out catalogues I was eager to get work experience. From an early age I always wanted to understand if I ran my business what it would feel like for the employees I manage. I wanted to get that experience.

2. Describe the parts of your job that keep you awake at night.

Production efficiencies, brand building, stability of the political environment, and to a certain extent pilferage issues.

3. Who has had the biggest impact on your career and why?

There is a very clear answer to that and it’s definitely my parents. From a purely business perspective it’s my dad. His commitment, dedication and vision have been incredible in shaping my life and my vision to do more with our businesses.

4. And the best professional advice you’ve ever received?

A motto that I live by which my dad always said to me: “Be clear about where you want to go and be dedicated to get there.”

5. The top reasons why you have been successful in business?

Darshan Chandaria

Darshan Chandaria

I am very passionate about starting new ventures, launching new products, new projects, and seeing them through from start to finish. I get great satisfaction in seeing the end result when something comes into fruition. The two major visions that keep me going are a drive to create something innovative, and to transform lives.

6. Where’s the best place to prepare for leadership? Business school or on the job?

On the job, without a doubt. I always wanted to do an MBA with one of the renowned institutions. In fact I had offers from a number of business schools. However, after spending two years in our business I realised I was learning more about our businesses and the practical elements of working life than I would in business school.

7. How do you relax?

I love food and fine dining. I love playing squash, tennis and travelling. I also love interior designing and architecture.

8. By what time in the morning do you like to be at your desk?

It varies depending on my schedule. I like to have at least 45 minutes to an hour first in the morning to reflect on the day ahead. Generally, I am on my phone and looking at emails from about 7am.

9. Your favourite job interview question?

Where do you see yourself in five years? Ambition, self-drive and the hunger for growth are the key traits I look for in a potential employee. I believe that a person can learn specific job related skills but without these three key traits they can’t be a potential future executive within our group.

10. What is your message to Africa’s aspiring business leaders and entrepreneurs?

A quote I live by is: “Success is not a destination but a continuous journey. The question is what is that journey for you?” I truly live by this and it has helped me redefine my journey.

Several international media houses have approached him in the past 2 months, according to one of his close associates. Though he is not in a hurry to move out of Royal Media Services, the promise of hefty pay might tempt him to change his heart.

Hussein Mohamed and Janet Mbugua Ndichu

In October, 2015, Citizen TV’s Janet Mbugua faked labour pains during the Monday Special show leaving her co-host Hussein Mohamed lost for words.

Hussein was shocked reacting like most men would, only letting out one word, “okay!” The tension, however, did not last long as Janet relieved him from the moment saying it was a joke.

The stunt brought down the studio in laughter, as the two together with the panel of guests shared in the light moment.
As the show wound up, Mbugua announced that she was getting off the screen for a period of three months, adding that Jackie Maribe would stand in for her.

Hussein Mohamed and Moses Kuria

In July 2015, Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria caused a stir on Tuesday evening when

he walked out in the middle of a live television interview.

Mr Kuria, who was being interviewed by Citizen TV anchor Hussein Mohamed, stormed out when a clip of him allegedly inciting youth in Gatundu was about to be played.

The clip, which has elicited anger from Kenyans, shows Mr Kuria urging his constituents to attack politicians opposed to the National Youth Service (NYS) projects.

Hussein Mohamed had asked him to explain his utterances. Moses Kuria claimed a huge portion of the clip had been edited and demanded that the video, which he says was 45 minutes long, be played in full for Kenyans to know what really transpired.

“I was taken out of context. To understand you have to see the full footage of my speech,” Mr Kuria said.

However, Hussein Mohammed insisted on playing the clip, which prompted Mr Kuria to walk out.

Kitengela land traders in ownership feud

A director of a land-buying company in Kitengela is embroiled in a property tussle following a disagreement with a senior group member.

Stanley Kinyanjui is the Magnate Ventures managing director.

He bought 100 acres from United Insurance Company in 2012, which at the time was under receivership. Yesterday, George Gichiri said Kinyanjui denied him a share of 10 acres he paid Sh1.7 million for.

Gichiri said Kinyanjui reneged on the agreement and refunded him the money, which he refused to take.

“Gichiri was to wait until the land value appreciates but he later said I denied him access to the land. I decided to refund his money,” Kinyanjui said.

Gichiri said he refused to take the money because the land has appreciated.

“Let him pay me at the current market price,” he said.

A surveyor who requested anonymity said he curved out Gichiri’s 10 acres from the 120 acres.

“I did my part. If the two have any wrangles, I do not want to be involved,” he said.

She adds that the businessman has failed to comply with the court order requiring him to cater for their full medical expenses and clothing. S.K. Macharia Biography, Wealth, Awards, Family, Wife and Children

S.K. Macharia (Samuel Kamau Macharia) is the owner of the Royal Media Services. RMS is an umbrella of fourteen radio stations that cover different groups of the diverse Kenyan communities and Citizen Television.

S.K. Macharia Background

Dr. Samuel Kamau Macharia was born in 1942 in Ndakaini Village, Murang’a County. He was born to a humble background couple who worked as squatters on settler plantations in Sabatia. He was born amongst three sisters and was the second born in the family. He lost his mother at the tender age of five. The family moved to Arusha in search of livelihood but the father was unable to secure any employment. Subsequently, Dr. Macharia started keeping company of Maasai boys, herding their family herds and would as a result traverse great distances looking for pasture alongside the Maasai boys, hence he would be away for extended periods of time.

Education

Dr. Macharia went to Ndakaini Primary School in standard one and thereafter he admitted to Gituru Intermediate School where he sat the Kenya African Preliminary Examination (KAPE) in 1958.

Following his high school education, he joined the Seattle Pacific University for a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree course in political science. Thereafter he registered for part-time classes in accounts at the University of Washington where he later enrolled for a degree programme. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Accounting three years later. Thereafter, he successfully completed a Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree in Accounting/Finance and a Master of Arts (M.A.) in Accounting. He later enrolled for certification to become a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) holder.

S.K. Macharia Career

He was later on offered a job as an untrained primary school teacher (then called UT) at Makomboki Primary School, where he taught for a year before being selected to join Kahuhia Teachers Training College for a two-year training course which would qualify him to become a P3 teacher. On completion of the course, he was posted to Gituru Primary School in 1961.

He went to the United States of America in 1962 and coming back to Kenya in 1969 he got a job in the Ministry of Local Government, as a Provincial Local Government Finance Officer (Supernumerary). He later worked with ICDC (Industrial and Commercial Development Corporation) and Kenya Industrial Estates (KIE). While at the KIE, Dr. Macharia was involved in implementation of President Kenyatta’s Africanization policy.

Thus in 1973 he was appointed to head a taskforce whose broad term of reference was to do a thorough audit of the Agricultural Development Corporation (ADC), with the aim of eventually liquidating it. The ADC was then a government parastatal organization, which had been established in 1965, through an Act of Parliament (Cap 346), to facilitate a land transfer programme from “European” settlers to indigenous Kenyans, following independence.

After one year, the team filed their report with Head of Civil Service and Secretary to the Cabinet, stating that ADC could be saved. Dr. Macharia was then transferred to the ADC as Financial Controller in January 1974 and tasked with implementation of

S.K. Macharia

the team’s report. Working together with the ADC’s general manager, the late Ben Gakonyo, they were able to successfully turn around the Corporation. Thus, his contribution to the agricultural sector in this country and, in effect, indigenization of the economy deserves acknowledging.

Dr. Macharia left ADC in 1979, to run Madhupaper, a tissue production company he had started three years earlier. The company grew rapidly and by 1985 had over 300 employees and “Rosy”, its tissue paper brand, was and still is a household name in East Africa. Madhupaper was the only local manufacturer of tissue paper in Kenya and, in just a few years, had saved the country millions of shillings in foreign exchange previously spent on imported tissue paper.

Royal Media Services

Today S.K. Macharia stands tall as a media mogul who owns the biggest radio network in Kenya with a combined listenership estimated at 70 per cent of all Kenyans-this was far ahead of the next private-owned radio station in Kenya. By the last count, his radio stations included: Citizen FM, a Swahili station, which commands an audience equivalent to 43 per cent of Kenya, Ramogi FM, Mrembe FM, Inooro FM, Musyi FM which broadcasts in Luo, Luhya, Kikuyu and Kamba respectively.

Though Macharia’s Royal Media attracted a negligible share of the gross advertising revenue three years ago, according to industry data, in 2004, the group captured a 10 per cent market share of the Sh8.4 billion that companies spent on media in Kenya.

In 2005, media planners interviewed by the Financial Standard indicated that Macharia’s stations will increase their market share. The expert argue that with the media market fragmenting the way it has-already 17 FM stations are featured in radio dials-in the Nairobi market alone, both national and local advertisers are enjoying a freedom of choice to target their customers in ways that they could not do before.

Service to University of Nairobi

Dr. Macharia has greatly promoted the vision and mission of the University of Nairobi towards enhancement of its institutional visibility and public image over the last decade, largely by providing free live coverage of its graduation ceremonies and other events. This magnanimity of service provision saves the University millions of Shillings.

As a former member of the University of Nairobi Council and chair of University’s Procurement Committee, he spearheaded the streamlining of the University procurement systems, saving the Institution millions of shillings. This is in addition to his support for transformative leadership at the institution, which saw the University of Nairobi adopt and internalize the organizationally effective culture or management practice of doing business from 7.00 am in the morning.

S.K. Macharia Net Worth

S.K. Macharia Net Worth: $150 Million
Mr. Macharia has investments in Agriculture, Real Estate, Transport, Banking and Telecommunication.

He is a businessman and media mogul , who owns numerous stations in both English, Kiswahili and Venacular that include Citizen TV, Kiss, Radio Jambo, Ramogi, Muuga, Chamgei,Iinooro, Bahari and Wimwaro.

His total net worth is estimated to be $150 million. He is in fact said to be an all rounder as his investments are found in all major companies in Kenya. Fondly known as the man with a short name. His net worth runs into millions of dollar.

S.K. Macharia Awards

RMS Chairman Dr S.K. Macharia received Ernst and Young Lifetime Achievement Award.

S.K. Macharia Family, Wife and Children

S.K. Macharia is a family man. He is married and blessed with six children, two girls and four boys who are all university graduates. It is a family that learnt to stay together closely through thick and thin as they went through livelihood experiences and challenges.

Paul Kinuthia Biography and Wealth

Paul Kinuthia is the founder of Interconsumer Products Ltd. He is the brains behind popular consumer products such as Nice & Lovely, All Time Sanitary Pads, Bouncy Baby Diapers, and Golden Shine shoe polish.

Career

Paul Kinuthia is no doubt one of Kenya’s latest entrants into the exclusive club of billionaires.
The businessman first burst onto the national stage four years ago when his company InterConsumer Products won the Business Daily’s TOP100 SMEs competition and captured the imagination of many enterprising Kenyans with his rags-to-riches story.

He was back in the limelight last week when he made a fortune spinning off a section of his company and selling it to global cosmetics giant L’Oreal in a deal estimated to have been worth more than Sh1.5 billion.

Mr Kinuthia wears his success with ease and his demeanour does not betray the stature of a man who has recently entered the coveted club of Kenyan billionaires.

That is perhaps because the picture of his humble origins is permanently affixed in his mind – even as he put pen to paper in what could easily be one of the largest take-over deals in Kenya this year.

Mr Kinuthia’s journey to the world of entrepreneurship began in 1995 in pursuit of what he thought would be a modest source of personal income.
The businessman says the company that he sold last week started with a capital of Sh3,000 he used to buy chemicals to make one of Kenya’s home-grown shampoos.

The backstreet operation was initially located in Nairobi’s downtown Kirinyaga Road before it moved to the city’s Kariobangi and Gikomba areas.

Initially running a one-man operation in which he was the only worker on the ‘factory’ floor and the chief salesman Mr Kinuthia would package his goods and walk from one beauty salon to another, introducing his products to prospective customers and telling them that his unbranded shampoo was just as good as the branded ones they had in stock.

Interconsumer products slowly gained traction but it was not until 2001 that the business broke into the limelight as a major player in Kenya’s cosmetics market.

Paul Kinuthia

Paul Kinuthia

“We broke even in 2001 and that is when I formalised its operations and hired professionals to help run the show,” he said.

The secret, he says, was right pricing. “Kenya is a price-sensitive market and the mere fact that we were able to supply our customers with quality products at relatively much lower prices did it for us,” Mr Kinuthia said.

“Before long, we were drawn into an all-out marketshare war with the multinationals who had dominated the personal care business for decades,” he said.

Using the combination of guerrilla marketing and low pricing Mr Kinuthia managed to steadily grow his share of the cosmetics market gaining control of 30 per cent of total marketshare in a growth that was mainly driven by his flagship Nice & Lovely brand of shampoo. Interconsumer sold cosmetics worth Sh1.7 billion last year, earning Mr Kinuthia more than Sh200 million in net profits.

That was barely two years after he graduated out of Business Daily’s TOP100 SMEs Club – having crossed the Sh1 billion annual revenue threshold joining the Club 101 of the competition that is run in collaboration with consultancy firm KPMG.

Deal makers said Interconsumer’s large market share and the growing popularity of its brands in the regional market is what caught the eye of the French cosmetics giant L’Oreal.

Chipukeezy – Interview

Interviewer: How many shows do you do in a week?

Chipukeezy: Many, my schedule is beginning to look like Kevin Hart’s (laughs). On top of my daily radio show, I do an average of three shows a week. Sometimes I can do four gigs in one weekend – I can be in Uganda on Friday, drop to Mombasa on Saturday, come back to Nairobi the same day, drive out of town for another show, and be back in Nairobi on Sunday for several appearances.

Interviewer: What kind of crowds do you pull?

Chipukeezy: Festivals have a life of their own, so it’s hard to tell if people are there to see you or other acts. Nevertheless, at my first one-man show in Dubai we got about 1,500 people.

And at my second show at Weston Hotel, Nairobi, we had to turn away about 400 people because the room could hold only 1,000. Our latest was a special showcase to thank all our sponsors who have taken this journey with us, so we had only 300 people.

Interviewer: Why did you decide to do one-man shows?

Chipukeezy: It was time; this industry needed to go to the next level and one-man shows were the obvious next step. Kenyan comedy has evolved, from Mzee Ojwang and Vitimbi days, Red Korna, to Churchill Show.

We need to keep taking it to the next level. Most comedians today don’t have content, they are just single characters in a TV show, hence they are resigned to being MCs. One-man shows are not easy to pull off, but are the way to go.

I had to really push myself out of my comfort zone and develop content for a global audience. I also have a really good team who’ve really worked hard to put everything together.

Interviewer: What kind of reaction did you get when you did your first show?

Chipukeezy: Amazing. For the first time in my life I got a standing ovation at the Weston show. I almost cried, man! Everybody came through, from Huddah Monroe, Kajairo, even Kanyari. Jaguar loved my show so much he gave me Sh30,000 on the spot; Mongolo gave me Sh10,000. It really motivated me to keep going; my calendar is packed till about mid next year, but I keep an eye open for the next show.

Interviewer: What is your secret?

Chipukeezy: I am very prayerful. Every single success I have today started as a prayer request. I also work hard and take big risks; you will be shocked at how many people will support you if you just take the first step. My corporate partners have really come through for me and I thank God for them.

Interviewer: What did your parents want you to do?

Chipukeezy: My mum wanted me to join the army, and I had my heart set on being a journalist. But I ended up in comedy. In fact, my mum had never really liked my comedy until she saw me with the President.

Interviewer: How did you end up in comedy?

Chipukeezy: It’s a funny story. I grew up in “shagz”, so we didn’t have TV or much knowledge about popular comedians and shows. I discovered Churchill at a cyber café as I was trying to learn computers; I watched on TV what he was doing and I felt I could do it.

I went to the Carnivore venue, Nairobi, just to see the guy and tell him he was doing a good job. After chatting with him for a few seconds he told me I should audition, but his team didn’t think I was funny.

I auditioned many times before I finally appeared on TV. I fell off the bar stool when I first saw myself on TV, and it wasn’t due to the beer. Unfortunately; it was the last episode of the season and the show took a two-year break.

What did you do in the interim and did you finish the diploma course?

Chipukeezy: No, I dropped out after the first semester to pursue comedy. So when the show went off air, I talked to Churchill to hook me up with anything just to keep me going. I ended up in theatre, narrating segments for Heartstrings Ensemble plays.

My English was horrible, but I had been paid to do it, so the audience had to deal with it. My directors, Victor Ber and Sammy Mwangi, really worked on my presentation. With time my English improved and so did my comedy.

I was also doing road shows and the Kid’s Festival with Churchill’s Laugh Industry, so at least I did not go hungry. When Churchill Show came back, I was ready for the big stage. Life has never been the same.

Interviewer: Where has comedy taken you?

Chipukeezy: It’s got me out of trouble several times; I was about to get expelled from high school for sneaking out but I begged the head teacher in such a funny way in front of the whole school that he let me stay.

Growing up, I always wanted to board an aeroplane and, thanks to comedy, I now have frequent flyer miles. I get upgraded in hotels and planes, all thanks to comedy.

Interviewer: Did you leave ‘Churchill Show’?

Chipukeezy: ‘Churchill Show’ is home; Dan (Churchill) is our father. No matter where we go, we always come back home. When you mature, you venture out to try new things, so you can have something to share when you go back home. I had to create room for new talent to flourish. The new talent needed space to grow, and they have.

Interviewer: What’s next for Chipukeezy?

Chipukeezy: More work and less sleep, showbiz sio mchezo (is not easy). Diamond, Eric Omondi and Churchill are all working hard to stay at the top, and I have to keep up with them.

Justice David Maraga Biography

JSC Picks David Maraga for Chief Justice Post

The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has picked Court of Appeal Judge David Maraga for the post of Chief Justice.

“The JSC has after lengthy deliberations recommended Hon Mr Justice David Kenani Maraga for appointment as Chief Justice and has submitted the name to His Excellency the President,” a statement from JSC read.

President Uhuru Kenyatta is expected to send Justice Maraga’s name to the National Assembly for approval.

During an interview with JSC, Justice Maraga had said that if appointed CJ he would name a senior judge as the Judiciary ombudsman and revive the programme for helping the poor with court cases.

He told the JSC that he would fast-track the implementation of the Legal Aid Act to ensure that justice is accessible to all.

He also said he would hire investigators to look into complaints against judges and magistrates with a view to helping to restore public confidence in the Judiciary.

Justice Maraga said he would introduce an email address to receive public complaints on the conduct of judges, saying the use of suggestion boxes was outdated and ineffective.

His name will now be forwarded to Parliament for vetting. If lawmakers endorse him, he will be formally appointed by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Why David Maraga Was Appointed New Chief Justice

The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has hinted at the key aspects it considered before settling on Justice David Maraga as the next Chief Justice (CJ).

Speaking to the media, Professor Tom Ojienda, one of the Commissioners listed at least five key qualifications that made Maraga stand out among the 10 other candidates.

According to Ojienda, JSC was looking for a candidate who had outstanding jurisprudence as well as best understanding and application of the law.

The Commission was also looking for an individual who had high levels of integrity and stood out among his peers.

Additionally, Prof. Ojienda said the Commission considered the candidate who had the best transformation agenda for the Judiciary.

More than that, Justice Maraga was appointed as he was considered best placed to get judicial staff to deliver and reduce the case backlog in most of the courts.

The interview panel was also searching for a candidate who had ambassadorial traits and can appropriately work with other arms of the government while still maintain the independence of the judiciary.

Commissioner Ojienda divulged that four other applicants also passed the qualification but Justice Maraga stood out among them.

He added that the decision to appoint Maraga was arrived at unanimously after he attained the highest score allocated by all panellists.

Court of appeals judge David Maraga told the Judicial Service Commission, which is responsible for nominating Supreme Court candidates to the president, that he would not enter the courtroom on Sabbath even in a presidential election dispute.

“It would be very difficult for me to sit on a Saturday to hear a case,” Maraga said in reply to a commission member’s query about a hypothetical situation, local media reported. “I would rather talk with my colleagues in the court to accommodate me and exempt me from sitting if the hearing extends to a Saturday.”

Identifying himself as a staunch Adventist, Maraga said his practice was to worship God in church on Saturdays.

“According to the judge, only a matter of life and death can make him miss church on Saturday — for instance, an accident happening on his way to church in which case he would stop to help the victims,” Kenya’s Standard newspaper reported Thursday in an article with the large headline, “I Will Not Compromise Church for Work, Says Judge.”

Judge David Maraga Interview for Chief Justice Post

Source: Daily Nation

Court of Appeal Judge David Maraga on Wednesday said he will name a senior judge as the Judiciary ombudsman and revive the programme for helping the poor with court cases if appointed the new Chief Justice.

He told the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) that he would fast-track the implementation of the Legal Aid Act to ensure that justice is accessible to all.

“Kenyans seeking justice will not be locked out due to lack of money. I will seek funding for those seeking legal assistance but have no means to get a lawyer,” he told the interviewing panel at the Supreme Court Building in Nairobi.

According to the Legal Aid Act, Kenyans who can’t afford to hire an attorney, are entitled to one at the expense of the State.

Others entitled to a State lawyer are stateless people, children, refugees or trafficked persons.

In his first year in office, Judge Maraga said he would consult with the JSC and restructure the Judiciary ombudsman to be headed by a secretariat led by a senior judge.

He would also hire investigators to look into complaints against judges and magistrates with a view to helping to restore public confidence in the Judiciary.

The current Judiciary ombudsman is Mr Kennedy Bidali, a former magistrate, who rose to the post of registrar of the High Court before his appointment.

Justice Maraga said he would introduce an email address to receive public complaints on the conduct of judges, saying the use of suggestion boxes was outdated and ineffective.

CONTENTIOUS ISSUES

Attorney-General Githu Muigai and Prof Tom Ojienda questioned him on his understanding of contentious, contradictory or grey areas in the Constitution.

Prof Ojienda: “What are your views on lesbians, homosexuals and intersex people?”

Judge David Maraga: “These are people, who have chosen that way of life. The law will deal with them as it is. The Constitution stipulates that marriage is between a man and a woman. It will depend on the issue at that time.”

Prof Ojienda: “Should the law be amended to accommodate intersexes?”

Judge David Maraga: “These are issues the society should sympathise with. They did not choose to be born that way. Anyone can give birth to such a child. Surely, will you kill them?”

AG Muigai: “When met with gaps in law, what law should we turn to? Is it Law of Contract, Children’s Act or the Constitution? For example in a three-way custody dispute between a surrogate mother and a couple who chose to have the child but have gone their separate ways?”

Judge David Maraga: “This ordinarily would be premised on contract, but you have to consider if it is legal or against public policy? You look at the issues and see how to resolve this, but the interests of the child remain supreme.”

AG Muigai: “When relatives of a patient in a vegetative state in hospital approach the court for guidance on who should switch off the life support machine, can the doctors switch it off?”

Judge David Maraga: “Doing so would be assisted suicide, which is a crime. The Constitution regards life as sacred and even using euthanasia is illegal.

The judge was also asked to explain the jurisdiction of the Supreme Court and if it should hear election petitions other than the presidential petition.

He said the mandate of the Supreme Court should only be limited to presidential election petitions, while the Court of Appeal should be the final authority on other poll petitions.

Ezekiel Mutua Proposed amendments in the Films

Ezekiel Mutua proposed amendments in the Films, Stage Plays and Publications 2016 which  would have put unnecessary measures on stakeholders and other actors in the Kenyan film industry. Some of the measures put up reportedly include ‘Kenyans taking videos using their mobile phones to register them with the board before posting them on Twitter or Facebook’ and ‘Internet service providers review all the videos exhibited and distributed through their platforms, failure to which they would be fined Sh2 million or be imprisoned for two years or both.’

These requirements seem needless and were deftly rejected by creatives and members of the film and theatre industry in Kenya. During a public forum the invitee were very vocal concerning the prposed amendment.

“We take this document to the shredder and in good faith start to engage afresh,” which was apparently met with a resounding ‘yes’ from the crowd, later adding “what is the crime in the creation of content? Unless you want people to stop creating content.”George Gachara, Director at The Nest Collective said.

Singer Joji Baro, who is a member of the LBGT community in Kenya accused the KFCB of banning his music without any substantial reason and also said that Ezekiel Mutua had affected the Lesbian and Gay community negatively.“You have affected the LGBT [community] negatively most of the time, yet we are not being represented in decision making or even in expressing our concerns. Why? And I demand an explanation to that!”

In his defense Ezekiel Mutua said that all the proposals put forward were formed with many other stakeholders in mind.He said it was against their mandate to allow children to get ruined by inappropriate content in the name of profit. He said that Kenya as a progressive country cannot afford to be passive recipient of foreign content that could corrupt the moral values of the children and compromise the national security.

Ezekiel Mutua diplomatic passport

In September, Ezekiel Mutua was invited to the summit by Google an internal event for policymakers and advocates for online safety around the world. This is when all the VISA drama began. He went to his Facebook account and flaunted the passport quote on quote

“Because of my moral values, including the banning of content promoting LGBT and atheists culture in Kenya, someone wrote in a local daily that I will never get a visa to the USA. I not only got it but it came on a diplomatic passport and I didn’t even have to go to the Embassy for biometrics or pay the visa applications fee. It was delivered to my office free of charge thanks to our efficient Ministry of Foreign Affairs and highly courteous US embassy officials. America here we come. To God be the glory,” said Ezekiel Mutua in the post.

This brought a lot of heated conversion among the facebook users and the social media users trolled him  but he resorted to insulting them.

In one message, Mutua insulted a friend and asked them to keep off his Facebook posts.

“Dear Mr Lemchi or whatever you call yourself. You have a right to express yourself but when you want to be a complete idiot and insulting please keep it on your wall. This is my space and i write what i want and i owe you no apology. Bloody fool,” the comment reads.

Although Kenyans demanded for the Film Board boss to apologise for the insult, Mutua remained adamant.

One Twitter user said:”EzekielMutua suffers inferiority complex. He is not confident. He feels he didn’t deserve that position. His grammar is terrible.”

Mwanzia D Mwanzia posted: “Your issues of LGBT rights can be addressed in a more mature way, even me I don’t like them but we don’t go yapping about other peoples lives as long as it doesn’t affect others.”

Meshack Mutinda Musyoki: “Diplomacy is not political or religious correctness but rather the willingness to agree to disagree. Live and let live.”

 Ezekiel Mutua diplomatic passport recalled

This led to the Immigration department to recall Ezekiel Mutua diplomatic passport, he was asked to immediately surrender his diplomatic passport days after he bragged about it.

The Director general of Immigration department, Gordon Kihalangwa said that Ezekiel Mutua did not qualify to hold a diplomatic passport and was supposed to return the diplomatic passport so that he can be given an ordinary passport, according to the Third schedule of persons entitled to Diplomatic passports, as per the Kenya Subsidiary Legislation of 2012.

He said that Ezekiel Mutua was given the diplomatic passport back in  February 2013 when he was in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and he was supposed to return the document as per the policy states upon the completion of duty that qualified one for it.

The constitution says people entitled to the passports include the President and DP, their immediate families and Speakers of Parliament. Senior security officers including the IG, Chief of Defence Forces, KDF Service Commanders, governors, Chief Justice, Deputy Chief Justice and their immediate families also qualify. In the event the country has a Prime Minister, such a person and his immediate family are also entitled to the document.

Ezekiel Mutua as a moral crusader

Ezekiel Mutua on Coca Cola “Taste The Feeling” commercial

Ezekiel Mutua stated  that a Coca Cola “Taste The Feeling” commercial which his organisation had initially approved, violated “family values” and featured “offensive” kissing scenes.

KFCB’s official statement actually quoted Mutua’s Facebook update, where he thanked some friends for bringing the “public outcry” to his attention. “On 23rd March, the KFCB approved our advertisement as it qualified for the ‘Parental Guidance’ (PG) rating in line with the established classification guidelines,” the soft drinks maker said in a statement.

Ezekiel Mutua on sexual adult topics on radio and tv

Ezekiel Mutua announced that Wedding Show Programmes, Marriage Counsellors like Bi Msafari ( Citizen TV ) and those who host such programmes, Maina & Kingangi ( Classic 105 ) will be required to take their adult sexual topics out of the watershed period. He said that we must ensure that content meant for adults is not aired during the watershed period and it was not negotiable. He said he  will walk to the studio with police and have the said Bi. Msafari, Maina & Kingangi arrested if they defy the guidelines.

Ezekiel Mutua also banned a film made by the arts collective Nest, Stories of Our Lives, based the Kenya’s LGBT community; a podcast hosted by a lesbian actor and singer duo; and a gay speed-dating event in Nairobi. When Netflix first launched in Kenya, Ezekiel Mutua called it a threat to the country’s “moral values and national security.”

At the tender age of 12 years he was thrust into the harsh reality of harsh street life. His peers convinced him to accompany them to Nairobi in search of greener pastures without the knowledge of his parents.

He was idle, frustrated and needed to survive so he agreed, only to realise that life in the city was harder than he expected.

While in Nairobi he stayed at Nairobi’s Saika estate, during which he worked as a vegetable errand boy to and from Gikomba market to survive. He experienced hunger and mistreatment bi indifferent members of public. With time, however, the people he was hanging out with introduced him to drug abuse. He ended up being tossed from one abandoned house to another

Life offered very little to laugh about but somehow he chose to embrace comedy as a vehicle to numb the misery of harsh street-life, encouraged by members of little-known Barikiwa set book group who often staged show in various colleges.

MCA Tricky as a comedian

In February 2016, he attended Churchill show auditions and beat everyone in the audition. His signature style on the stage is baggy grey coat,Red shirt and a three quarter navy blue trouser. MCA Tricky hopes to become a mentor to the less privileged including aspiring comedians, advising them to follow their hearts’ yearnings.

“Nothing comes easy; it is important to give it your all if you hope to succeed. It is important to keep in mind that life is a battlefield and not a playing ground and being here for a short time we need to strive and make the best of it,” he said.

Janet Kanini Ikua Biography, Family and Illness

Janet Kanini Ikua Biography

Janet Kanini Ikua has been hosting NTV’s N-Soko Property Show and she is a former NTV News Anchor while dabbling as the Pampers brand ambassador. But she is currently in transition. She feels she has a responsibility to give back to Kenyans for standing up with her. Her focus is now on healthcare and apart from creating awareness about lung cancer and cancer in general, she is also helping Kenyans who want to travel abroad for treatment to have a pleasant experience, their sickness notwithstanding.

“I work with an agency – Doctors Beyond Borders. The agency links international patients with doctors, hospitals, hotels and even transport. They are not limited to India alone; wherever you want to go for treatment, they are there to help you. You can reach them on Kenya@doctorsbb. co.ke and telephone number is 0717871827/ 0734950351. The reason we are helping people this way is because many people have approached us asking how we went to India and the experience. We had a good experience with Doctors Beyond Borders and we would be glad to be of help,” she explains.

Janet Kanini Ikua also hopes that she will be instrumental in ensuring Kenya gets a PET scan machine and Kenyans get access to affordable and decentralised healthcare.

Janet Kanini Ikua health

Janet Kanini Ikua challenging health journey began in April 2015 when she was diagnosed with Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) that had resulted in blood clots in her legs. For two months she received what at the time appeared to be successful treatment in Nairobi. But a racing heart and breathlessness after minimal physical effort remained a concern to the doctor. In mid-June, Janet Kanini Ikua would learn from a cardiologist, Dr. Muriithi Nyamu, that there was a blood clot in her heart and in the pulmonary artery leading to her lungs. She was immediately admitted to the hospital’s Intensive Care/High Dependency Unit. During this hospital stay, she underwent a minimally invasive but critical, very high risk procedure to remove the clot in her heart. Ten days later, Kanini walked out of the hospital.

Two weeks later during a routine check-up the doctors confirmed a clot had recurred in her right leg. Fortunately, Dr. Nyamu had inserted a blood filter that stopped the clot from making its way to vital organs. Over the next few weeks in July and August, Janet Kanini Ikua went through more checks, including a bronchoscopy, colonoscopy, gastroscopy so that the doctors could figure out what was the source of the frequent clotting despite getting blood thinners and wearing compression stockings. The bronchoscopy revealed an “unidentified” mass in her lungs.

In August, she managed to sneak back to work and host a couple of shows to create DVT awareness and also joined her Precious Blood (Nairobi) High school classmates for their 20th year reunion.

Anyhow, there is only so much prodding and poking that one can take especially when plausible answers and diagnoses are evasive. What Janet needed was a PET scan. The CT and MRI scans were not, in her case, adequate to give the docs that medical “aha” moment. There isn’t a PET scanner in Kenya – probably because PET is nuclear medicine that uses a radioactive substance and requires highly-specialized facilities and expertise. The operating costs also are prohibitively high.

In September, Janet Kanini Ikua (with hubby) decided to go to New Delhi, India where she could receive medical answers and proper, thorough diagnoses.

On September 13, Janet Kanini Ikua received another diagnosis – the PET scan (and additional tests) revealed metastatic adenocarcinoma of the lung that has spread to the abdomen and lymph nodes in the neck area. Sadly and simply put, that unidentified mass in her lungs turned out to be stage 4-lung cancer that has spread from the primary site to other areas. This was not the medical answer that Janet Kanini Ikua was expecting.

The silver lining is that her medical team has come up with a comprehensive treatment plan that includes scheduled cycles of chemotherapy and Janet Kanini Ikua remains her usual upbeat and positive self.

Janet Kanini Ikua Healed of lung cancer

On 14th February 2016 Janet Kanini Ikua went to have facebook page to post that she was healed of the lung cancer.

“My dear friends, relatives, colleagues, supporters, prayer warriors. I have wonderful news! Our prayers have been answered! I am redeemed from the affliction of cancer!” said Janet in a long pots on her Facebook page.

“God has remained true to His word and healed me from Cancer and I give Him all Glory and Honour and Praise for this far that He has brought me!” an elated Janet added.

Janet Kanini Ikua revealed that her doctors in India, where she had been receiving treatment were amazed by the results of the PET MRI scan, which showed that the cancer lesions that had been in her liver, bones, abdomen, lymph nodes and lungs were no more.

“They said that many people must have been praying for me because these results are rare in a stage 4 diagnosis, and I told them “Yes. I have a prayer army. Prayer warriors who held me up when I was too weak to pray and believe,” she added.

While thanking well-wishers who had offer both prayers and financial support, Janet revealed how she had become “so emotional” as she battled the ravaging disease.

“You guys – may God meet you all at your points of need. May He open His floodgates of blessings to you and yours!” said Janet.

But she also has to deal with a blood clot in her heart which she thankfully said had reduced in size from being 1.5cm by 1.4cm to 8mm by 7 mm across.

“Oral blood thinner pills refused to work on me last year June, so I am still on twice daily injections, now for seven months, yet they ideally shouldn’t be used for more than two weeks. But this too shall pass,” said the NTV’S N-soko show host.

Janet Kanini Ikua still has another four cycles of chemotherapy with milder drugs to sustain the progress made, before another review to also check the blood clotting.

Janet Kanini Ikua was full of praise to her husband whom she said had stood by her all the way and was her beacon of hope.

Her husband, she said, also keep it a secret reports from doctors which indicated that Janet had between six months and a year to live.

“Hubby refused to tell me because he knew it would stress me more. And I’m glad he didn’t tell me, because I would probably have been sadder and frustrated, looking at my two babies, wondering whether I was feeling more sick today because I’m dying, whether I’d be there for them at their next birthdays,” said Janet who credited God for her miraculous healing.

“Hubby carried this burden alone, and for that I will forever be grateful to God for giving him the strength and courage to do so as he watched me go through chemotherapy,” she added.

Her doctors too, Janet said, played a great role in diagnosing her problem and seeing to it that she had beaten cancer.
